Re: GPS in Rural Setting
yeah i've used gps some...
i've had a couple in different boats before and navigated through several miles of fog and came right out on the shore where i was supposed to more than once... i've used them to document the locations of old cabins and found them to be very accurate....within a couple feet... i use them for navigation points when out on the water in a boat... i got a couple handhelds now...one is a magellan and i think the other one is too... i've also used them up in the mountains when hiking around for waypoints so i can get back to trails in the fog.... very handy for caching items in dense woods too, you can always get back the same spot.... and they are popular here for geocaching but i never got into that sport... i'm thinking rei.com should give you all the scoop on the newest and popular models... http://www.rei.com/ |

Re: GPS in Rural Setting
I've got TomTom 6 on my Windows Mobile phone (E-ten x800) and used it during a trip to Montana. It worked just fine out in the mountains west of Glacier National Park and really surprised me by even having the one lane dirt roads we were traveling on in its maps. Actually, in some of the valleys it had a hard time getting a lock on the satellites... just took longer than normal.

Re: GPS in Rural Setting
Tomtom V3 here - even in my (very!) remote BO place it picks up 5 satellites. If I ask it where the nearest petrol station is, it says "Turn Left".
If I turn left I'd fall in the water, my place is an island! |
Re: GPS in Rural Setting
Question for you guys with GPS with LCD display. When you are in an urban area, it shows road maps, gas stations, hotels, etc., right?
What does it display when you are out in the boonies, say in a National Forest? A topo map? |
Re: GPS in Rural Setting
I use an Explorist from Magellan, its a small handheld device about the size of a cell phone. I have used it for about 2 years. Its great for marking way points and to measure distances when in a rural setting. I have used it several times on ATV rides in which the area is new, it allows me to follow my track back.
The only down side is during the summer and the leaves are thick on the trees the Sats. are hard to pick up. I can still get a fix, but often it is in 2D, and may be off by 20 to 30 feet. I like the fact it gives me my elavation and longatude and latitude at all times. I hope that helps. |
